Pansy Craze
“Pansy” was a term used in the early 20th century to refer to gay men who were considered flamboyant or effeminate by society. Though it is derogatory in origin, the imagery of the Pansyflower, if not the term itself, has become a symbol of LGBTQIA+ empowerment, resistance, and resilience. The “Pansy Craze” is a term coined by historian George Chauncey to describe the period in early 20th century U.S. history when queer people, mostly gay men, and drag performers were able to be themselves more freely before the Great Depression, repeal of Prohibition, and homophobia shut it all down. Here’s to a resurgence of the Pansy Craze - may it never fade.
